On Saturday, April 13, 2013, nine Temecula Velo members completed the Hemet Double Century. The ride encompassed 200 miles throughout Riverside County.
Never before had Temecula Velo had this many participants in an endurance event. Dubbed Team Velo Loco, these 9 riders were in the saddle in excess of 14 hours.
The riders started at 4:30 a.m. and faced heavy fog and cold temperatures with little to no visibility. By sunrise, the team was completely soaked with a mixture of sweat and water from the fog. The team was followed by their own personal SAG (Ramon Diaz, Lilia Kleinman and Gina Ruiz) which not only provided nutritional support but motivation and encouragement.
Temecula Velo mantra "never leave one behind" once again proved crucial as they rallied around each other through the harsh conditions including strong headwinds, tired legs, cramps, saddle soreness and mental exhaustion. One can never truly prepare for all of the elements faced during an endurance event but mental toughness is what each Loco member had. The riders encountered debris in the road along with cold winds and the constant passing of cars at high rates of speed. By 8:45 p.m. all members of Team Loco had finished. Words cannot describe the overwhelming emotions one feels when completing such an event. While I know that some doubted their own ability, I knew each of them had what it took to go the entire distance. Roland von Kriegenbergh, Creed McPherson and I completed three doubles this year and qualified for the Triple Crown jersey.
If you must know, all of this started because one amazing member, Roland von Kriegenbergh was proof that completing a double century is truly attainable. His actions inspired me and the others to take on these challenges. I would like to congratulate Roland, Ed Rios, Creed McPherson, Tony Ruiz, Tom Ray, Lorie McCormick, Kayla Nebecker and Mark Mitchell for completing this event with me. Your collective efforts proved that Temecula Velo is a team in every sense of the word. Of special note, Victoria Mitchell rode with us for the first 100 miles, Nicole, Sasha and Ramon Sandoval met us on the road to ride with us for portions of the route. Thanks to all of the Velo members that cheered us on at the SAGs. Special thanks to Ramon Diaz, Gina Ruiz, Lilia Kleinman and Jairus Ciocon for providing awesome SAG support! We could not have done it without you.
